In 2012, The Great Nottinghamshire Bike Ride moves to an exciting new start/finish venue, with new routes and a slightly different date for the event. Forming part of the new Cycle Live event, The Great Nottinghamshire Bike Ride routes will start and finish on Nottingham’s Victoria Embankment. The approximate 20, 50 and 100 mile routes will head south out of the Embankment through Wilford and Ruddington and into some of South Nottinghamshire’s beautiful countryside renowned for its appeal to cyclists. The 20 and 50 mile routes will route back via Holme Pierrepont, with the 100mile route heading north beyond Newark and into some of the far reaches of Northeast Nottinghamshire. All three routes will route back to The Embankment where riders will be met by a hive of activity which will transform the Embankment for the full weekend. The event takes place on Sunday 15th July, with other events and activities to be announced for Friday 13th and Saturday 14th July. Nottinghamshire isn't know for its mountains, in fact the tallest point in the county is supposedly the spoil heap from the Silverhill colliery. But Ramsdale Hill at 158m is the highest point around Nottingham and has great panoramic views. It's just 5 miles out if Nottingham but felt a world away as we passed lambs in the pastures and found some great ancient ridgeway bridle paths to explore.

On the way back we took in the Lambley Dumbles and the nearby Bonney Doles. As you do.

My name is Denis, I`m living in Sneinton, on 4th of february we had a fantastic ride with Jon. It was Amazing ride, we started it at 2pm and returned in 7pm. And the best and most interesting thing that we started it in a "Spring" and ended in a "Winter" because in that period of time all Nottingham was in a snow. We viewed beautiful landscapes, we had an extreme downhill from two slippery hills, we have seen friendly cows, we were riding on a virgin snow :) We have been in Clifton and Gotham. It was amazing, unforgettable ride. Sneinton bikers are alive, Thank You! :)

A nice new route for us opening up the area around Gotham, with some excellent stretches on bridleways that would be easy in the dry and fun in the mud. We also crossed the GCRN railway that runs from Ruddington to Loughborough- in use during the summer months as a tourist attraction.

A short ride this time round. A great little loop that takes you out of Sneinton, across Lady Bay bridge then west to Holme Pierrepont. Past the flood defences sluice gate then round the end of the National Watersports Centre rowing course.

Big skies are guaranteed and a completely flat pedal largely off road. This would be so much better if the cyclist didn't have to cope with the rubbish junction where Daleside Road, Meadow Lane and Manvers Street Collide. There has been no thought given here to anything but car circulation, and any option involves a bit of danger- its challenging for experienced cyclists but really scary with kids.

On a crisp and sunny day we headed out to Clifton via the Beeston Canal, Victoria Embankment and Clifton Bridge cycle path to Clifton Village. There we paused at the allegedly haunted Clifton Hall now restored into flats by the former secret millionaire and more recently bankrupt Chek Whyte.

We returned along the bridleway at the top of the wooded escarpment that rises from the Trent at Clifton, with great views over Beeston and the Boots site. This made a great shortish winter ride, mostly off the road on smooth cycle tracks and bridleways.

A lovely 24 mile ride today took us out through the wold-like landscape around Lambley, Woodborough and Epperstone, to the north-east of Nottingham. We turned east to Gonalston, Hoveringham and Caythorpe, taking in the more open landscape of the Trent valley.

Beautiful blue skies and sunshine- sorry those who had to miss out!

With the temperature in the mid 20s we headed for Colwick woods to find some of the less explored tracks. The woods often feature on our routes- it's great to ride through trees so close to the built-up areas around, but this is the first time we have spent time trying to connect the different parts together. It was shady, and we pretended to have skills.

A great new initiative is kicking off on 20th August in Sneinton- "looking to help people of all ages get their injured bicycles back on the road. We are looking for people who know all about fixing bikes. If you're a dab hand at taking bikes to bits and putting them back together, we'd love to hear from you".

They have a facebook page, and a website is under development.

We headed for the amazing views from the Crich memorial in Derbyshire for our first ride in August.

We were treated to a uniquely Sneinton sight just as we left Hermitage Square- Dave our local dragon sculptor transporting one of his creations by bike.

The ride to Crich passed through some great scenery, getting deep enough in to Derbyshire to get the Peaks landscape. The price of all that being a huge number of hills, and we were grateful for a sustaining pint at the Old Oak Inn, Horseley Woodhouse.

The round trip was about 48 miles, so a long ride by our normal standards, but a massive undertaking if you factor in the Derbyshire hills. In the evening we just had strength left to check out the spectacular Nottingham Riverside Festival fireworks.

We went out for about 3 hours on Saturday 16th July- through Strelly and across the M1 on a small bridge.

We found some great unsurfaced roads with peaceful cycling, in real contrast to the motorway nearby. 20 miles or so round trip from Sneinton, we'll do this one again sometime.

A big ride for us, as we limber up for the Great Notts Bike Ride. A 46 mile round trip to Belvoir took us out through Holme Pierrepont, Radcliffe on Trent, Cropwell Butler, Tythby, Langar, Barnstone, Granby, Plungar and Redmile. Then back via Elton, Orston, Scarrington, Car Colston, East Bridgford, Gunthorpe, Burton Joyce, Stoke Bardolf and, Colwick.

The beautiful Vale of Belvoir, superb weather and a buzzard riding the thermals around Belvoir Castle kept our spirits up.

Great ride today- out on the Beeston Canal then via the Trent to Sawley Marina.

A bit of a nasty hack along the A453 then down to the south side of the Trent via Thrumpton.

One puncture one broken chain and one ruptured tyre left us limping back to Sneinton. Similar disasters happened last time we tried this route- might give it a rest for a while...
